JSO: Suspect at large after fatal crash on University Blvd, extended road closure

A suspect in his twenties, reportedly wearing a red shirt, is being sought by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Authorities in Jacksonville are on the hunt for a suspect involved in a deadly hit-and-run incident that forced the closure of all southbound lanes on University Boulevard on Friday.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, around 3:15 p.m., a high-speed collision occurred involving a Nissan and a Dodge Challenger traveling northbound near the 1900 block of University Blvd S. Witnesses reported the Challenger was speeding at over 100 mph.

The incident led to the Challenger crashing into the Nissan, causing both vehicles to veer off the road. The Nissan collided with a telephone pole and caught fire, while the Challenger careened into southbound traffic, hitting a Toyota Camry at the intersection of Saint Cecilia Road.

Emergency responders from Jacksonville Fire and Rescue declared the Nissan’s driver dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the Camry’s occupants were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Following the crash, the Challenger’s driver fled on foot. The suspect, described as a man in his 20s wearing a red shirt, remains at large. The registered owner of the Challenger has not faced charges, as their description does not match that of the suspect.

Road closures are expected to last for about another two hours, JSO says.

JSO asks that anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information regarding this crash to contact JSO at 904-630-0500, Email JSOCrimeTIps@jaxsheriff.org or contact CrimeStoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS where you may remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward.
