A tragic incident has emerged from Louisiana, where a woman is facing allegations of fatally shooting her one-year-old daughter inside their home. The mother reportedly told the child’s father, “I just sent our baby to God,” following the heart-wrenching event.
The accused, 28-year-old Kristin Bass, was taken into custody and booked at the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office jail on Friday, according to records accessed by Law&Crime.
Reports from local media, such as the Beaumont Enterprise, indicate that Bass is facing charges of first-degree murder.
The incident unfolded on Thursday, New Year’s Day, at the family’s residence on Quelqueshue Street in Sulphur. Present at the home were Bass, her one-year-old daughter Acelynn Moss, her two-year-old daughter, and the children’s father, Bradley Moss. Bradley Moss reportedly heard a loud noise and rushed to investigate, discovering Bass with a firearm in hand.
According to Lake Charles-based NBC and The CW affiliate KPLC, Acelynn had been shot, while her older sister was in distress, crying out for assistance.
The heartbreaking plea, “Help me, daddy,” was reportedly uttered by the two-year-old sister, underscoring the devastating impact this incident has had on the family.
“I almost lost two babies,” Bradley Moss told the TV station. “I lost one because her mama wanted to send her to God.”
The mother was apparently unrepentant, at least in the initial aftermath of the incident.
She allegedly said: “I just sent our baby to God.”
As the father recounted, the defendant allegedly added: “Now I gotta get her.”
Sulphur police officers are said to have arrived at the home sometime after 8 p.m. Bass was arrested, and the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services took custody of the 2-year-old girl.
Bass’ bond was set at $10 million. The case was still being investigated as of Friday.
Sulphur, Louisiana, is located in the southwestern part of the state, about 10 miles west of Lake Charles.
