The Raleigh community is mourning the tragic loss of a cherished educator, whose life was brutally cut short in a horrifying incident that unfolded within her own home. Zoe Welsh, a fixture of Ravenscroft School’s science department in North Carolina, was killed during a break-in early Saturday morning, leaving a void in both her school and the wider community.

The distressing events came to light when Welsh herself called 911 around 6:30 a.m. to report an intruder in her residence on Clay Street. However, during the call with emergency dispatchers, the situation escalated as the intruder began to attack her, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

First responders arrived swiftly, discovering Welsh with critical injuries. Despite their efforts to stabilize her before she was rushed to the hospital, the damage was too severe, and she was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Authorities have yet to disclose the precise cause of her death.

In the aftermath of the attack, officers canvassing the area apprehended 36-year-old Ryan Camacho, who has been charged with murder and felony burglary. Currently, it remains uncertain whether there was any prior connection between Camacho and Welsh.

Raleigh Police Chief Ricco Boyce addressed the community, expressing condolences and emphasizing the profound impact of this loss. Local ABC affiliate WTVD highlighted Welsh’s long-standing dedication to education, noting her nearly twenty-year tenure at the Ravenscroft School, a prestigious private institution serving grades K-12. According to her LinkedIn profile, Welsh was a cornerstone of the school’s science program, leaving behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered by colleagues and students alike.

I am deeply heartbroken for this mother, friend, and mentor to many in our community, and for the unimaginable trauma her family must endure. We extend our deepest sympathy to Ms. Welsh’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

Whenever there is a loss of life in our community, it affects us all. As a department, we share in the sadness of this loss. The arrest of the suspect sends a strong message that criminal acts will not be tolerated in the City of Raleigh.

Local ABC affiliate WTVD reported that Welsh was a teacher at Ravenscroft, a private K-12 school. According to Welsh’s LinkedIn page, she’s worked at the school for nearly two decades.

“The Ravenscroft community is devastated by the loss of our beloved colleague and friend Zoe Welsh,” a spokesperson for the school told WTVD. “Zoe has been a cornerstone of our Upper School Science Department and the Ravenscroft community for years. Her loss is deeply felt by all of us who had the privilege of working with her and learning in her classroom.”

Camacho is at the Wake County Detention Center without bond. He’s slated to appear in court on Monday. North Carolina Department of Corrections records show Camacho has an extensive criminal history and spent more than five years in prison for discharging a firearm. He was released in July.
