SEOUL – Ahn Sung-ki, a towering figure in South Korean cinema known for his six-decade-long career and endearing public persona, passed away on Monday at the age of 74. His enduring popularity and admirable character earned him the affectionate title of “The Nation’s Actor.”
Ahn’s passing, attributed to his prolonged battle with blood cancer, was confirmed by Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Seoul.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ahn amassed over 20 major film awards in South Korea, including five prestigious Grand Bell Awards for Best Actor—an unparalleled achievement in the country’s film history.
Renowned for his modesty, reliability, and family-friendly image, Ahn remained free from major controversies, leading a serene and stable personal life. Public opinion polls frequently recognized him as South Korea’s most cherished actor, solidifying his status as “The Nation’s Actor.”
