Trial looms for NJ businessman who allegedly killed brother and family

The trial of Paul Caneiro, a businessman from New Jersey, charged with the alleged murder of four family members and the arson of two homes, is slated to commence on Monday.

Caneiro stands accused of shooting his brother, Keith Caneiro, 50, in his driveway in 2018. He is also charged with the shooting and stabbing of Keith’s wife, Jennifer, 45, and the stabbing of their children, Jesse, 11, and Sophia, 8, inside their home. Afterward, he reportedly set the mansion on fire, leaving Jennifer and the children to perish in the flames. Earlier that day, a fire also broke out at Paul Caneiro’s own home, but he and his family managed to escape unharmed.

The shocking events left the affluent community of Colts Neck, New Jersey, reeling in disbelief.

Investigators eventually pieced together that Paul Caneiro allegedly orchestrated the murders and fires to conceal his financial misconduct. Prosecutors suggested he aimed to create the appearance of a family-wide threat, diverting attention from his illicit business activities.

Firefighters battle a fatal fire on Nov. 20, 2018, in Colts Neck, N.J.

This case, described by former Monmouth County prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni as “the most brutal” of his career, unraveled a family business partnership riddled with suspicion. It emerged that Keith Caneiro suspected his brother was siphoning funds from their jointly owned businesses.

Paul Caneiro has pleaded not guilty and continues to assert his innocence.

Caneiro pleaded not guilty and has steadfastly maintained his innocence.
