A Georgia man who called 911 to claim that his missing mother had been “abducted by aliens” was sentenced to prison after police discovered that he had concealed her death by burning her body in the family’s backyard.
Jason Christopher Campbell, 35, received a 10-year prison sentence Friday after being convicted of hiding the death of his mother, Marie Campbell, at their home in Homer, about 75 miles northeast of Atlanta, in January 2025, Now Georgia reported.
Marie Campbell, 65, lived with her son and was reported missing on Jan. 6. Her car, purse, identification and cellphone were all left behind, prompting relatives and neighbors to launch an urgent search.
The search escalated on Jan. 8, when Campbell told investigators that an unidentified person had picked his mother up from their home three days earlier and that he had not heard from her since she disappeared.
Police soon learned, however, that Campbell had called emergency officials the previous day and reported that his mother had been “abducted by aliens,” according to the outlet.
The unusual claim led investigators to search the property. There, they found Marie Campbell’s charred remains in the backyard, near a still-smoldering fire and a burned mattress.

Investigators also found a vehicle with a seat removed or folded down. A sheet covered the area and was stained with mud.
Campbell was charged in February 2025 with concealing his mother’s death after an autopsy confirmed that the remains belonged to her, Now Georgia reported.

Authorities have not revealed how Marie Campbell died, and her son was not charged with causing her death.
During a five-day trial late last month, however, Banks County prosecutors established that Campbell had concealed her death.
Under Georgia law, concealing a death is a felony when the act prevents investigators from determining whether the person was unlawfully killed.
After Campbell was found guilty, Judge Albert Collier imposed the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, Now Georgia reported.
