Venezuela swears in new leader - but who else wants the job?

Delcy Rodriguez, a former member of Hugo Chavez’s administration, has quickly assumed the role of interim president following Maduro’s departure.

While neither Rodriguez nor the White House have detailed future plans, Rodriguez has criticized the attack and seizure of Maduro. However, she expressed an openness to developing a “cooperation agenda” with the United States.

Notably, Machado, who recently received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize—a distinction once sought by Trump—expressed her admiration for the former US president during her acceptance speech.

Some experts speculate that Rodriguez, known for her hard-line stance, might be positioning herself as a temporary leader in the post-Maduro era.

Imdat Oner, a former diplomat and policy analyst familiar with Venezuelan affairs, suggested to CNN that her rise to power could be part of an agreement between the US and influential figures preparing for life after Maduro.

“In this scenario,” Oner explained, “Rodriguez would act as a transitional leader until a democratically elected president takes office.”

CNN has previously reported that US officials favoured Rodríguez since they believe she can provide a stable transition, offer a more professional relationship than Maduro – and, perhaps most importantly, ensure that future American energy investments are protected.
