An officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fatally shot a driver in the Midwest amid the Trump administration’s intensified immigration actions targeting a major U.S. city. Federal authorities justified the shooting as self-defense, while the city’s mayor condemned the incident as “reckless” and unnecessary.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in a residential area south of downtown Minneapolis, not far from historic immigrant marketplaces and approximately one mile from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020.

The shooting quickly attracted a large crowd of protesters, numbering in the hundreds, expressing their outrage.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara provided a brief account of the incident to reporters. Unlike federal statements, he did not suggest that the 37-year-old driver posed a threat. He confirmed that she was shot in the head.

“The woman was in her vehicle, obstructing Portland Avenue. A federal officer approached on foot, at which point the vehicle started to move away,” explained Chief O’Hara.

“At least two shots were discharged, leading the vehicle to crash along the roadside,” he added.

A large throng of protesters gathered at the scene after the shooting, where they vented their anger at the local and federal officers who were there.
