In a dramatic and tragic turn of events, a confrontation between two housemates in their western Ohio residence escalated when one of the women went upstairs, retrieved a firearm, and fatally shot the other in the head.

Halle Harvey, aged 26, admitted guilt to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of 30-year-old Shyanne Mitchell, according to court documents accessed by Law&Crime. Under the terms of her plea agreement, additional charges, including murder and assault, were dismissed.

On the afternoon of January 17, 2025, Harvey and Mitchell were at their shared home on Opperman Avenue in Riverside, near Dayton. Both women resided there with their respective partners, as confirmed by Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. in a statement.

The disagreement began in the basement, though the cause of the argument remains unspecified. The conflict intensified to the point where Harvey decided to go upstairs, retrieve her 9 mm handgun, and return to the basement.

The confrontation turned physical, as reported by the Dayton Daily News, which referenced a Riverside police report that included witness accounts. During the altercation, Harvey fired the weapon, striking Mitchell in the head, stated Prosecutor Heck.

Law enforcement officers responded to the scene around 3 p.m. Upon their arrival, they encountered Harvey outside the home with her hands raised. The report mentions that she sustained scratches on her face and chest during the incident.

The defendant reportedly expressed shock over the shooting and repeatedly stated how she did not mean for it to happen. She was handcuffed and apparently had multiple questions for the officer near her.

Harvey asked the officer whether she could hit her vape and then asked if she was going to be imprisoned for life, the local outlet reported.

Harvey is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 26.

An obituary for Mitchell remembers her as “a radiant spirit whose life was marked by love, laughter, and creativity.” She was a mother, it added, and “was truly one of a kind, touching the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.”
