A Melbourne driver has suffered potentially permanent vision loss after a “completely unprovoked” bashing near a busy car wash over the weekend.
Police are searching for a thug who they say punched the 49-year-old victim 10 times while they were both queuing for a car wash on Cheltenham Road in Keysborough around 1pm on January 10.

Constable Vicky Mullan reported that the police are still uncertain about what triggered the attack, but it seemed the perpetrator was “agitated” by the wait required for the car wash.

“At this point, it appears to be a road rage incident, with the assailant growing impatient while trying to access the car wash,” Mullan explained.

The aggressor left the scene hurriedly in a silver Haval H6 SUV, offering no assistance to the victim.

Initially returning home, the victim later decided to take a taxi to Dandenong Hospital after noticing his vision was affected by the incident.

Medical scans revealed that the victim sustained a broken nose and a fractured eye socket, necessitating upcoming eye surgery.

Doctors have indicated that the victim might suffer permanent vision loss in one eye and were advised that sneezing or blowing his nose could exacerbate the damage.

“It’s a completely unprovoked attack, very serious injuries to the victim,” Mullan said.

“He’s shaken up, but he was in good spirits when I last spoke to him.

“But obviously concerned that this male is still out there and worried it could happen to someone else.”

Police have released CCTV footage of a man they believe can assist with their enquiries.

They believe the area would have been busy at the time and are urging witnesses to come forward.

“We have CCTV footage and we suggest you hand yourself in, because someone that knows you will see that and it’s better you hand yourself into us. We will identify you,” Mullan said.

“You’ve potentially caused someone lifelong damage to their eye. It’s just not good enough [and] the public don’t deserve that.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au
