A man has been shot dead by police after he aimed a bow and arrow at officers during a welfare check at a home in north-central NSW.

An individual has been fatally shot by police after he pointed a bow and arrow at them during a welfare check at a residence in north-central New South Wales.

Authorities reported that they initially engaged with the man outside a home located on Quia Road in Gunnedah at approximately 1:40 PM. The situation escalated when the resident re-entered the house and emerged with the weapon.

“The officers retreated to their vehicle for safety, but a police firearm was used when the man aimed the bow and arrow at them,” stated NSW Police in an official release.

Despite receiving medical attention from NSW Ambulance paramedics for his gunshot injury, the man succumbed to his wounds at the location.

The state crime command's Homicide Squad will lead an investigation into the shooting.

The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command with oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
