A woman has been killed by a falling tree near Wollongong in NSW as wild weather batters Australia’s east coast, triggering flash-flood warnings and beach closures.
Emergency services were called to the Illawarra Highway at Macquarie Pass on Saturday afternoon after a tree branch struck a vehicle.
The female driver died at the scene, while a male front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries. Two rear-seat passengers were unhurt.
The death came as dangerous thunderstorms and heavy rain swept across NSW, with flash-flood warnings in place and beaches closed north and south of Sydney.

The Central Coast’s Ettalong experienced a deluge, with a staggering 93.5mm of rain recorded in just one hour. Not far away, Pearl Beach was hit even harder, amassing 133mm over a two-hour period earlier that day.

Gosford recorded 56.6mm of rain in one hour; 66mm fell at Bensville; and 71mm of rainfall was recorded at Koolewong.
More than 880 people have called the SES for help since the severe weather began, with the majority of requests from metropolitan areas.
NSW SES spokeswoman Emily Barton said the rain had been experienced “far and wide” across the state.

Emergency services are currently in full swing, with dedicated volunteers actively responding to flood rescues. “There are numerous reports of leaking roofs and downed trees,” a spokesperson confirmed.

Meanwhile, Southeast Queensland is bracing for impact, as forecasters issue warnings about potential flash flooding, damaging winds, and large hailstones. A formidable band of thunderstorms is making its way eastward, heading directly towards Brisbane.

In the aftermath of the storm’s fury, several cars remain stranded, swallowed by the surf. Authorities estimate that between 10 to 20 vehicles have been lost to the tumultuous conditions.

Falls up to 60mm in half an hour from the storms were reported in the Lockyer Valley and Darling Downs.
Clean-up efforts are underway in parts of Victoria after torrential rain quickly overfilled the Wye, Kennett and Cumberland rivers in holiday hotspots along the Great Ocean Road.
The extreme event carried huge amounts of water downstream, swamping campgrounds and upending vehicles.

In Victoria, flash flooding wreaked havoc at Wye River, washing several cars onto the beach. The scene paints a vivid picture of nature’s power, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

More than 178mm fell in the area in six hours, with the Lorne station registering its highest 24-hour rainfall total since records began in 1884.

Disaster assistance has been announced for flood-affected communities, with funding provided to councils for emergency relief centres.

A woman who warned others of a landslide just moments before she was buried in rubble is being hailed a hero as desperate search efforts continue. Multiple children are among those unaccounted for after a big landslide destroyed the popular Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park on New Zealand's North Island. The woman is being praised by locals after she frantically pulled campers from their beds at 5am and warned them of danger so they could start packing up to leave. In a tragic twist, the same woman later became trapped in a toilet block along with several others when the hillside completely collapsed a few hours later, at about 9.30am on Thursday. The amenities block was buried in the landslip, with rescuers hearing terrified screams for help, but being unable to hear further cries after about 15 minutes. 'I just want you to know that one of the women that's in that shower block, she was a hero,' a witness, who didn't want to be named, told the New Zealand Herald. 'She went around at 5 o'clock this morning and she got us all out of bed and she woke us all up so that we could move out... and she's not out.'
