In a surprising turn of events, the enigmatic buyer of a sprawling Wyoming ranch, once listed for nearly $80 million, has been unmasked as Chris Robinson. Known for his leadership role as CEO and his ownership of a neighboring estate, Robinson has emerged as the new proprietor of this vast expanse.

The Pathfinder Ranches, which covers an impressive 916,000 acres—an area surpassing the size of Rhode Island—has changed hands in what is being heralded as a landmark transaction. This monumental sale marks one of Wyoming’s largest working ranches finding a new steward, as reported by Cowboy State Daily.

Initially, the rumor mill was rife with speculation that a foreign entity, perhaps even Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was behind the acquisition. Defying these whispers, it was ultimately Ensign Group, Robinson’s enterprise, that secured the purchase, though the final price remains under wraps.

“We are very fastidious about trying to take care of things,” Robinson shared with the media. He added optimistically, “We have a lot of room for improvement, but I predict that we will make this place shine.”

Robinson brings a wealth of experience in fields such as agriculture, resource management, public lands, renewable energy, and water management. His personal life is equally fulfilling, as he shares it with his wife, Rochelle Allen Robinson, and their four children, all of whom are married.

‘So, we’re kind of reuniting that, and we intend to, we’re operators. We’re not generally landlords,’ Robinson told the outlet.

‘We’re going to, overtime, grow into it, where we’re mostly running our own livestock on it,’ he added.

Beyond running the Salt Lake City–based company, Robinson serves on Utah’s Summit Community Council and has dedicated many years to conservation. 

The sale now ranks as one of the largest land transactions Swan Land Company has ever handled in Wyoming. 

‘This is what we specialize in are the large complicated transactions,’ Swan Land Company real estate broker and listing agent Scott Williams told the outlet.

‘The beauty of this is the buyers are excellent ranchers, but they’re also conservation-minded operators as well,’ he added.

While the ranch owns 99,188 acres, it relies on leased land for the rest, which it is allowed to use – primarily for grazing livestock – through agreements with the government or private landowners. 

The total amount of land can feed an immense number of livestock, with a capacity of 90,444 cow-months of grazing. 

Robinson said his company envisions a big future for Pathfinder, acting not just as operators but also as investors, with plans to expand livestock operations significantly. 

The ranch was listed for $79.5 million in August of 2025

‘One of the things that happens on these ranches when there’s someone who buys them and they’re not operators, they’re just buying and maybe they want to recreate on them, or have a bug-out if the world comes to an end, but they have these tenants out there who are short-term thinkers,’ Robinson told the outlet.

‘They have no incentive to fix anything – maintain the fence, develop the spring, keep the diversion in the ditch working,’ he added. ‘They don’t have any long-term perspective.’ 

However, he admitted that the company will pause plans to buy large herds for now, as the cost of mature cattle remains high. 

‘With cattle prices as high as they are, we’re not going to be buying any mother cows to the stock,’ Robinson told Cowboy State Daily, adding that the ranch grows its herd by keeping some of the young female cows, or heifers, from each year’s calf crop.

For the time being the ranch will grow its herd organically by keeping these heifers to mature, rather than spending on outside cattle.

‘If you eat your seed corn, you have nothing to plant,’ Robinson told the outlet.

‘That’s our worst fear and it’s happened to us, is that we’re forced to liquidate our mother cows,’ he added. ‘They’re the factories. I keep using that term, but they’re what produces the widgets.’ 

The purchase followed a deal struck four years earlier, when Robinson’s company bought Stone Ranch from the children of the family that had sold off large swaths of the original Pathfinder Ranch in the 1970s.

Stone Ranch’s significance came from its role as the connective bridge between Pathfinder Ranch’s two halves, reuniting land that had been historically whole. 

While Stone Ranch itself carries between 800 and 1,000 mother cows, Ensign Group’s sprawling ranch portfolio across three states supports a large-scale herd of roughly 13,000. 

‘There are a lot of bigger landowners and a lot of bigger cattle operators,’ Robinson told the outlet. ‘But with the cows – the factories – we are one of the larger.’

Robinson and his team now find themselves at the center of efforts to regrow America’s cattle herd, which has shrunk to its lowest level in more than 70 years – just 86.7 million head as of January 2025.

After years of drought, inflation and mounting costs, the US has seen its cattle herd decline at a rapid pace.

‘If things get really tough, we’ll get rid of the yearlings. But we don’t get rid of mother cows,’ Robinson told Cowboy State Daily.

‘There have been droughts and things in the past, but we’ve got enough scale and flexibility that we can sell the yearlings,’ he added.

Long focused on scale and flexibility through vast holdings across multiple states, the acquisition of Pathfinder Ranches instead represents a decisive shift toward growth.

‘It’d be an expensive buffer. This gives us an opportunity to grow our business, and it provides more opportunity for our great employees, and our team, our managers,’ Robinson said. ‘And it surrounds a landscape we already love.’

Robinson said the vast desert landscapes are a particular passion of his, a fondness so strong that he recently bought another desert property in Carbon County. 

The desert properties provide operational flexibility for Ensign Group and help reduce winter feed costs by limiting hay purchases. 

Although high desert ranges are traditionally used in summer, Robinson said the company plans to winter cattle on them too, according to the outlet.

As for the lodges across Pathfinder Ranches, Robinson’s team revealed they intend to put them to use, though exactly how remains undecided. 

‘We’ll try to find a use for them. Maybe do some outfitting or hunting out of them,’ he said.

‘There’s a lot of value in those buildings, and, if they’re not used, they’ll fall apart, so you’ve got to use them. That will be one of our challenges. We’ll figure it out.’

Pathfinder Ranches captured widespread attention thanks to its staggering size – twice that of Jacksonville, Florida, the largest city by land area in the continental US.

It also surpasses the size of the fictional Dutton Ranch from the hit show Yellowstone, which was depicted as between 775,000 and 825,000 acres.
