Dozens of Westside families receive free groceries amid rising food costs

On Saturday, families in Jacksonville found much-needed relief as Tamika’s School of Epicure stepped up to distribute free food, offering a buffer against the burden of escalating grocery costs.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a heartening display of community support, a local nonprofit organization reached out to dozens of families on the Westside with a food distribution event held at Westside High School.

Headed by CEO and founder Tamika McKenzie, herself a proud alumna of Westside High, Tamika’s School of Epicure organized this initiative to help alleviate the financial pressures that families face amid soaring food prices.

The event saw families queuing up to receive an array of fresh produce, toys, and household items, all free of charge. This significant turnout underscored the pressing needs within the community.

“We cater to at least 200 to 300 families at each distribution,” McKenzie explained. “Just last month, we reached out to thousands of individuals. Our love for this community runs deep, and I am a fervent supporter of its people.”

In a conversation with First Coast News, McKenzie shared that her organization has been a steady source of support for Jacksonville’s Westside for five years, ensuring that families have access to nutritious food options and reinforcing the message that they are not facing their challenges alone.

Looking ahead, Tamika’s School of Epicure plans to host monthly food giveaways for the rest of the year, all at Westside High School.

McKenzie says the nonprofit is currently in need of a food distribution truck to expand its reach and better serve families across the area. She adds that community donations and partnerships play a critical role in making these food drives possible.

Those interested in supporting future distributions can donate or volunteer through Tamika’s School of Epicure.
