A devastating incident in Texas has left a 7-year-old boy severely injured after a drunk driver collided with his family’s vehicle. Authorities report that the collision resulted in the boy being thrown 60 feet from the car, ultimately leading to the loss of his leg.

Ruksara Abbasova, the boy’s mother, shared the harrowing experience with Fox affiliate KDFW, describing the moment she discovered her son, Saeed, lying in a pool of blood following the New Year’s Day accident in Dallas. “When I saw him on the ground, my heart sank. I thought I might lose him,” Abbasova recounted.

Initially overwhelmed by the situation, Abbasova described her confusion about the source of her son’s injuries. “I didn’t understand where all the blood was coming from. Was it his head, his back, or internal injuries?” she recalled. It wasn’t until she saw his body that she realized his leg was missing.

According to police, the incident occurred when 23-year-old Michael McRae, allegedly intoxicated and speeding, crashed into the family’s car on the Central Expressway. The collision caused the vehicle to flip, and during the chaos, Saeed was ejected, severely injuring his leg.

Emergency responders quickly transported Saeed to a local hospital, where doctors had no choice but to perform an amputation to remove what remained of his leg. Speaking to KDFW from his hospital bed, Saeed expressed his sorrow, saying, “I am so sad. I lost my leg.”

Despite the gravity of his injuries, Saeed acknowledged his good fortune in surviving such a traumatic crash.

“The main thing is that I’m alive,” Saeed said. “I’m with you, mom. With my family. I know that I will be good. I will be better.”

Police say witnesses spotted McRae weaving through lanes while speeding for several miles, KDFW reports. Saeed, who turned 8 just days after the crash, was sitting in the back of his family’s vehicle.

“I saw my husband, I saw my daughter, I didn’t see my son,” Abbasova said about the initial moments after the crash. “Someone hit us, and after that the car start to flip.”

The heartbroken mother added, “It’s tragedy for me. Tragedy. Because do you know how to see your child in this condition? You want to take his pain to you, you want to take his injuries to you. But you can’t.”

McRae is facing charges of intoxication, assault with serious bodily injury, failure to maintain financial responsibility, and resisting arrest. He is currently out on bond and awaiting his next court date, KDFW reports.
