Air Force One returns to Washington area due to minor electrical issue, White House says

President Donald Trump is set to switch to a different aircraft to continue his journey to the World Economic Forum in Davos after an unexpected return to Joint Base Andrews.

On Tuesday evening, Air Force One, carrying President Trump, experienced an unplanned return to Joint Base Andrews shortly after takeoff for Switzerland. The flight was interrupted about an hour into the journey.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, explained that the plane’s crew identified “a minor electrical issue” shortly after departure. Out of an abundance of caution, they opted to return to the base.

A reporter aboard noted that the press cabin lights flickered off briefly after takeoff, though no immediate clarification was provided. Approximately 30 minutes into the flight, passengers were informed of the decision to head back.

President Trump will continue his trip by boarding an alternate aircraft to reach the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The pair of planes currently designated as Air Force One have been in operation for nearly 40 years. Boeing is actively working on new replacements, although the project has encountered several delays. These presidential aircraft are heavily modified with advanced protective measures, including radiation shielding and anti-missile systems. Additionally, they are equipped with extensive communication technologies to ensure the president can maintain contact with the military and issue commands globally.

Last year, the ruling family of Qatar gifted Trump a luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet to be added into the Air Force One fleet, a move that faced great scrutiny. That plane is currently being retrofitted to meet security requirements.

Leavitt joked to reporters on Air Force One Tuesday night that a Qatari jet was sounding “much better” right now.

Last February, an Air Force plane carrying Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Germany had to return to Washington because of a mechanical issue. In October, a military plane carrying Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had to make an emergency landing in United Kingdom due to a crack in the windshield.
