A substitute teacher in Jacksonville has found themselves in legal trouble after being discovered with illegal substances on school premises, leading to their immediate ban from Duval County public schools. This incident unfolded at Oceanway Middle School, as confirmed by the school’s administration.

The school’s principal communicated the situation to parents on Tuesday, detailing that the event took place on January 15. The substitute teacher, whose identity remains undisclosed, was caught with drugs in an area restricted to employees only, prior to beginning any classroom duties. Importantly, the principal, Stansel, assured families that the teacher had no interaction with students during this time.

In addressing the parents, Principal Stansel emphasized the unwavering commitment to student safety, expressing relief that students were not involved in the incident. “The safety and well-being of our students remains our highest priority, and I am grateful that no students were involved,” Stansel stated.

The substitute teacher now faces several drug-related charges in light of these events. This development underscores the critical importance of maintaining a secure and drug-free environment in educational settings.

“The safety and well-being of our students remains our highest priority, and I am grateful that no students were involved,” Stansel said.

The teacher has since been arrested on multiple drug-related charges, according to the message.

The individual was employed by the district’s substitute teacher provider, ESS. Stansel said the district confirmed with ESS that the teacher will no longer be allowed to work in any Duval County public school.

First Coast News is working to confirm the teacher’s identity, as well as the detailed allegations.
