A man is in police custody after a device was thrown into a crowd during an Invasion Day rally in Perth, forcing thousands of marchers to evacuate over bomb fears.

Authorities in Western Australia have confirmed that a suspicious device was hurled into a crowd of protesters in Forrest Place, located in the heart of the central business district. The incident occurred shortly after the rally commenced at noon, just as speeches were beginning.

Police Commissioner Col Blanch reported that individuals standing on the upper level on the eastern side of Forrest Place witnessed a man throw an object near the stage. “Members of the public that were situated on the upper level on the eastern side of Forrest Place observed a male throw an object down in front of the stage area,” he stated.

Forensic teams are currently analyzing the device to determine if it contained any explosives. Commissioner Blanch indicated that results are expected by tomorrow.

Premier Roger Cook condemned the incident, calling it “completely unacceptable.” He emphasized the importance of unity on Australia Day. “This Australia Day should be about unity, not division. That a peaceful protest was targeted in this fashion runs against the very heart of what it means to be Australian,” Cook expressed.

The Invasion Day rally commenced at noon in Forrest Place, coinciding with a March for Australia demonstration held in Wellington Square.

The Invasion Day rally began at 12pm (3pm AEDT) in Forrest Place and protesters gathered for a March for Australia demonstration in Wellington Square at the same time.

The suspended rally was eventually able to resume, where protesters marched through the streets calling for justice for First Nations peoples.
