Bartlett Police have confirmed that the Bartlett Public Works employee succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital following the incident.

The accident caused disruptions to the Metra District West service after the train, heading towards Elgin, collided with a small snowplow vehicle at the Oak Avenue and Railroad Avenue intersection around 8:35 a.m.

According to Metra, the vehicle, equipped with a snowplow, was operated by a village of Bartlett employee when it was hit by the train. Fortunately, no passengers on the train reported any injuries.

The investigation is currently being led by the Metra Police Department, with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also responding to the scene.

Federal transportation officials have joined the probe, as authorities look into whether the victim began crossing the tracks and simply may not have seen the train coming.

Unsuspecting commuters were left shaken.

Bartlett Mayor Daniel Gunsteen said in a statement:

“Village of Bartlett officials and staff were stunned and deeply saddened this morning by the sudden death of Public Works employee. He was operating a small snowplow vehicle near the Bartlett Metra station when he was struck by an Elgin-bound Metra passenger train. He was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“This tragic accident highlights the dangerous and often unrecognized work our Public Works employees perform every day to keep our community safe.

“We offer our comfort, prayers, and full support to the Public Works Department and all Village staff, who are understandably devastated and shaken by the loss of their colleague, friend, and valued member of their work family.

“Above all, we extend our deepest condolences to his wife and to all of his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Our hearts go out to everyone who knew and loved him. He will be remembered for his dedication, service, and the positive impact he had on our community.

“On behalf of the entire Village of Bartlett, we mourn this profound loss and stand with his family and our Public Works team in their grief.”
