The federal government has praised the resilience of Australian writer Yang Jun, who has been detained in China since 2019, on an alarming anniversary.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has expressed her condolences to Yang Hengjun and his family during this challenging time. There is a possibility that Yang may be able to engage in an appeal process regarding his situation.

Concern among Yang’s family and supporters has intensified following reports of a significant cyst on his kidney. They fear that without appropriate medical attention, his condition could become life-threatening while he remains incarcerated.

In recent months, Australia’s relationship with China has seen improvement. This positive shift follows the removal of trade sanctions, diplomatic exchanges, and the release of Australian journalist Cheng Lei from detention earlier in 2023.

Minister Wong emphasized that the federal government remains committed to advocating for Yang’s wellbeing at every available opportunity.

Australia’s relationship with China has improved after the lifting of trade sanctions, diplomatic visits and the release of Australian journalist Cheng Lei from detention in 2023.

Wong said the federal government was continuing to advocate for Yang at every occasion.

“The Australian government has made clear to China that we remain appalled by Dr Yang’s suspended death sentence,” she said.

“Dr Yang is entitled to basic standards of justice, procedural fairness and humane treatment, in accordance with international norms and China’s legal obligations.

“We advocate consistently for Dr Yang’s welfare and conditions.”
