After experiencing scorching temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius, parts of Australia are now bracing for significant rainfall, with storms predicted to sweep across every state and territory in the coming days.

This week, huge amounts of moisture have been building over northern and central Australia, reports weather channel Weatherzone.

Meteorologists anticipate a bout of wet and stormy weather impacting the entire nation over the weekend, potentially extending into the following week. The heavy rainfall raises concerns about possible flooding in certain areas.

Regions in northern and central Australia could see cumulative weekly rainfall exceeding 100mm, with some locales expected to receive several hundred millimetres.

This includes communities that recently endured temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

In Marree, South Australia, where temperatures soared to 49.8 degrees last Thursday, forecasts suggest that between 50mm and 100mm of rain could fall by tomorrow.

The anticipated downpour increases the risk of flooding, which may lead to road closures in central Australia.

The wet weather system may also raise a tropical low over Western Australia and the Northern Territory to tropical cyclone level, warns the Bureau of Meteorology.

Today the lower pressure system is forecast to move off the Kimberley coast in northern WA, and strengthen over the weekend as it tracks west.

The bureau is warning gales of up to 120km/h are possible for some coastal parts from late tomorrow.
