The tragic events surrounding the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner aboard a Carnival cruise ship have taken a new turn as her 16-year-old stepbrother made a court appearance in Florida. This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of her untimely passing.

On Friday, the young stepbrother was seen entering the James Lawrence King Federal Justice Center in Miami, as reported by NBC 6 Miami. Upon his entrance, the courtroom was secured, and he faced a federal magistrate judge during a closed session. The nature of this case remains shrouded in mystery, as the court has sealed the records, leaving the public in the dark about the specific charges brought against him.

Despite the confidentiality of the proceedings, sources cited by the Daily Mail have suggested that the teen is contending with two charges related to Anna’s death, which occurred in 2025. Though the exact details remain undisclosed, this information hints at the gravity of the accusations being considered by the authorities.

Following the court session, the young defendant proceeded to a probation office, a step that typically aligns with pretrial release procedures. This move may indicate the initial stages of the legal process as it unfolds in the coming months.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, a room steward discovered Anna’s body hidden under a bed while cleaning a cabin, at around 11 a.m. The ship then detoured and stopped at Port Miami on November 8.

Anna Kepner died on November 7, according to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner. The vessel was in Cuba at the time, on the northwest coast.

According to officials, Anna died from “mechanical asphyxia,” meaning someone placed her in a chokehold.

In December, Brevard Judge Michelle Studstill announced the 16-year-old stepbrother as a suspect during a custody hearing. The boy’s father, Thomas Hudson, had been seeking emergency custody of his 9-year-old daughter.

The FBI, however, has not officially named a suspect in the case.
