Iran sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to over seven more years in prison after she began a hunger strike, supporters said overnight, as Tehran cracks down on all dissent following nationwide protests and the deaths of thousands at the hands of security forces.

Amidst ongoing tensions over its nuclear ambitions, Iran faces new convictions against activist Narges Mohammadi, coinciding with its delicate negotiations with the United States. These discussions aim to stave off potential military action from U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a show of defiance, Iran’s chief diplomat recently emphasized the nation’s strength derived from its ability to resist pressure from global powers. This statement follows a round of talks in Oman with American representatives, reflecting Iran’s staunch position.

Iran’s president expressed cautious optimism, stating, “The Iran-U.S. talks, facilitated by friendly nations in the region, marked a forward step. Dialogue has consistently been our path to peaceful conflict resolution. The Iranian people have always reciprocated respect but will not yield to coercion.”

The future of these negotiations remains uncertain, with no clear indication of a subsequent meeting. President Trump, following Friday’s talks, provided limited insight, remarking, “Iran seems eager to strike a deal, as they should be.”
