This Morning’s Gyles Brandreth has unveiled an unexpected method for shedding 5 pounds in just two weeks, and it revolves around a straightforward breakfast choice.

At 77, Gyles, a familiar face on the show, took to Instagram to reveal a photo of a modest piece of cheese as part of his daily routine.

In pursuit of his target weight of 12 stone 9 pounds by his 78th birthday next March, Gyles is currently embracing a low-carb diet.

He captioned the post: “My little chunk of breakfast cheese. Once I reach my goal, I’ll treat myself to some fruit and a motivating chat from @benshephard.”

Starting at 13 stone 9 pounds, Gyles has successfully dropped 5 pounds over two weeks of cutting carbs. His aim is to reach 12 stone 9 pounds by March 8th, fingers crossed!

One fan was pleasantly surprised by Gyles’s breakfast choice, commenting: “Cheese for breakfast! What a fantastic diet.”

‘Don’t forget your protein!’

‘Great start Gyles you will ‘earn’ that slice or two of birthday cake.’

‘Don’t forget to do some exercise too, don’t focus too much on the scales. Well done.’

According to the NHS, if you want to lose weight, you should aim to eat the likes of two or more portions of vegetables a day, wholegrain carbs and keep your consumption of dairy ‘light and low’.

Gyles’ post about his diet comes after he recently opened up about the shock of his grandson’s cancer diagnosis.

The TV star described it as a ‘shock to the system’ because he thought of the disease as ‘something that happens to unlucky middle-aged people’.

Gyles was horrified when Kitt was diagnosed at 15 months old in April 2017, after his parents found a pea-shaped lump near his stomach while changing his nappy.

Kitt, who is now 10 and lives abroad with his parents and brother Rory, 19, was given the all-clear in November 2017 after being treated at Great Ormond Street and was able to ring the end-of-treatment bell in the hospital.

Gyles’s writer daughter Saethryd and her Army veteran husband Mark were initially told by a GP that the lump was likely to be a cyst or a hernia, but tests revealed Kitt had rhabdomyosarcoma – a rare form of cancer.

He said the whole experience was ’emotional’, adding: ‘It’s a case of holding your breath, being patient and trusting in the team, and I have to say the team were matchless at every level, from the consultants right the way through to the nursing staff and everyone else.’

Gyles spoke out about his experience for World Cancer Day last month and shared his support for GOSH Charity’s appeal to help build a world-leading Children’s Cancer Centre.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
