Tragedy struck in Washington, DC, when a man fatally shot his girlfriend and injured her 12-year-old daughter before taking his own life following a police chase on Wednesday. The incident has drawn attention to the devastating impact of domestic violence.

Initially, there were fears for the safety of a 3-year-old boy, the son of Stephon Jeter and the slain woman, as he was reported missing in the aftermath of the shooting. Fortunately, he was later discovered unharmed at a family member’s residence, as reported by WJLA.

Authorities from the DC Metropolitan Police Department responded to a distress call at a residence shortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, they found the mother gravely injured with multiple gunshot wounds, and despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two children were also discovered in the home; the 12-year-old daughter had sustained a minor gunshot injury and was taken to a hospital, while the woman’s 8-year-old son was unharmed and subsequently placed in the care of his father.

Stephon Jeter, aged 35, was quickly identified as the primary suspect in this harrowing case. An Amber Alert was issued for the missing toddler as the search for Jeter intensified.

The pursuit led police into Maryland’s Prince George’s County, where officers located Jeter around 6:30 p.m., according to WTTG. The chase concluded when Jeter’s vehicle crashed, and officers found him deceased inside, the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The young boy was not with him, as Jeter had left him with a relative before his final confrontation with the police.

Interim Metro Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll addressed the situation, emphasizing its tragic nature and the perilous consequences of domestic violence, which continues to affect countless families.

Police have not released the name of the victim.
