Humiliation for Kiffin as LSU coach is heckled in humiliating loss

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was packed with celebrities for one of college football’s marquee matchups. But by the end of Saturday’s showdown with Alabama, LSU coach Lane Kiffin was left facing a night of humiliation.

First Lady Melania Trump watched from the crowd, while Kiffin arrived at Tiger Stadium for the spirit walk alongside LSU alumni Shaquille O’Neal, Angel Reese, Livvy Dunne and Paul Skenes. Hollywood actor Kevin Costner was also part of the high-profile group.

The celebrations quickly faded for Kiffin, one of the most polarizing coaches in college football. Alabama cruised to a 31-13 victory, leaving LSU’s College Football Playoff hopes hanging by a thread.

Late in the defeat, which dropped LSU’s record to 6-3, a supporter in Tiger Stadium was heard directing an expletive at Kiffin from the stands.

‘Hey Lane, f*** you!’ the fan shouted, with the moment picked up during ABC’s broadcast.

LSU entered the game ranked No. 14 in the country, meaning its chances of reaching the 12-team College Football Playoff are now in serious danger ahead of next week’s meeting with Texas.

The defeat also extended Kiffin’s record as a head coach against Alabama to 0-6.

Melania Trump’s appearance in Baton Rouge prompted a major security operation. During her visit, she announced a $5 million scholarship fund through her Fostering the Future initiative.

O’Neal and Reese, meanwhile, first met at an LSU-Alabama game in 2022. The encounter led to a close friendship before Reese went on to become a WNBA star.

Reese had already returned to LSU earlier in the week, watching the women’s basketball team overwhelm Texas South 131-22 on Thursday night.

Skenes and Dunne also have strong ties to LSU. The pair met while Dunne was competing as a gymnast for the school, and both went on to build successful careers after leaving Baton Rouge.

They have since become one of the most recognizable sporting couples in the United States and returned to campus for Saturday’s headline matchup.

Dunne posted behind-the-scenes footage and shared details of her game-day outfit on social media. She was also photographed speaking with Kiffin’s daughter, Landry, before the game.

The 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff had already sparked debate in Louisiana, with Kiffin questioning why Alabama’s visit was not scheduled as a night game.

‘It’s interesting that all of a sudden this year, for the first time ever since 2010, or the first time since 2010, Alabama is coming to LSU and not playing at night,’ Kiffin said.

‘There are a lot of people around here upset about it and complaining. I said, “Well, don’t think we have a lot of people around the SEC really rooting for LSU this year after what’s transpired.”’

Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer rejected the suggestion that the earlier kickoff gave his team a meaningful advantage.

DeBoer replied: ‘I feel like we’re on the road, so I’d rather play at home if I’m going to have all the advantages.’

‘But with the earlier kickoff, is that what you’re asking? I don’t choose that, I guess. I don’t have any choice in it. It is what it is. We just have to show up and play.’

Saturday’s contest was also the final scheduled meeting between LSU and Alabama until 2028, after the SEC moved away from making the rivalry an annual fixture.

‘I think that’s just sad, and I understand it, so I’m not being critical,’ Kiffin said of the change. ‘Most of these decisions probably come down to money.’

‘Whether it’s realignment or rivalries, I think it’s sad when you look at the bigger picture. Money is driving decisions that affect such great traditions and rivalries.’

‘There have been plenty of positive changes in college football over the years. But there is also a lot that I, and many other people, wish had stayed the same — rivalries and conferences, for example,’ Kiffin added.

‘Unfortunately, this is where we are. It doesn’t seem as though much will be protected when it comes to television contracts, money and other people’s ideas.’
