Shooting at South Carolina State University leaves two dead

Tragedy struck South Carolina State University on Thursday as a shooting on campus resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left at least one other person injured. Authorities are actively investigating the incident.

In a statement, the university confirmed that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is spearheading the investigation into the shooting. However, details concerning the identities of the victims and the condition of the injured party remain undisclosed at this time.

According to university officials, a lockdown was promptly initiated around 9:15 p.m. Thursday after reports emerged of gunfire at Hugine Suites, a student residential complex on campus.

As of 1 a.m., the university campus continues to remain under lockdown as the investigation proceeds. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident.

The campus remains on lockdown as of 1 a.m.

The university’s Department of Public Safety is being assisted by the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office in patrolling on and around the campus.

Friday classes have been canceled, the university said, and counselors are available for students.
