Tragedy struck in Sydney’s south-west as a two-car collision resulted in the deaths of two individuals, leading to the arrest of a driver involved in the incident.

Authorities received an emergency call around 10:20 a.m. today, responding to a car theft at a service station on King Georges Road in South Hurstville.

According to police reports, a 31-year-old man allegedly attacked a 25-year-old man, stealing his red sedan before making a swift getaway.

The stolen vehicle was later spotted driving along King Georges Road in Beverly Hills.

Police claim the driver refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit that involved aerial support from a helicopter.

The chase extended along the M5 motorway but was eventually called off near Bankstown for safety reasons.

The car was still being tracked when it crashed into an Alfa Romeo on the Old Hume Highway in Camden South about 11.10am.

The two people in the Alfa Romeo died at the scene.

The driver of the allegedly stolen red sedan ran away but was arrested.

He was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory testing and will be transferred to the Campbelltown Police Station for questioning.

Police have set up several crime scenes and declared a critical incident.

A critical incident is declared when there has been serious injury or death during a police operation.

The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the independent Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

The Old Hume Highway was closed in both directions at the intersection of Camden Bypass and the right-hand turn from Camden Bypass to Old Hume Highway northbound was also shut.

“Ongoing police investigations are expected to take some time,” Transport for NSW said on its website.
