Australia’s esteemed aerials world champion, Laura Peel, has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the upcoming Olympics due to a severe knee injury. The two-time world champion found herself unable to recover in time, marking a significant loss for the Australian team.

Peel is not alone in her disappointment. She joins fellow Australians, snowboarders Cam Bolton and Misaki Vaughan, and teenage freeskier Daisy Thomas, all of whom have also been forced out of the Games due to injuries.

The unfortunate turn of events for Peel began in early February during a pre-Olympic training camp in Airolo, Switzerland, where she suffered a ruptured ACL. Despite this setback, she remained hopeful of clinching her first Olympic medal at what would have been her fourth Games appearance.

Her optimism was not without merit. Prior to her injury, Peel had been in exceptional form, having recently secured a victory at a World Cup event in Canada. Her performance had positioned her as a strong contender for a medal in Italy.

However, as official training commenced at the competition jump site, Peel came to the realization that her body was not ready for the rigorous demands of competition, leading to her heart-wrenching decision to step down.

“I’m heart-broken my Olympic dream has come to an end in this way,” the 36-year-old expressed, encapsulating the disappointment felt not only by herself but by her supporters and teammates as well.

“I put everything into this campaign, and never imagined I wouldn’t make it to the start gate.

“I’m grateful for all the support I have received from the medical and support teams, we have worked so hard to try and change this outcome, but unfortunately it’s not meant to be.”

Her withdrawal is also a blow to Australia’s hopes in the mixed team event, the first time they were set to field a three-skier team, with Peel competing alongside Danielle Scott and Reilly Flanagan.

The Australian team is looking to bring in a replacement athlete for the aerials competition.

On Friday, snowboarder Cam Bolton had to be medically transported back to Australia from Italy after fracturing his neck and back in a scary training accident before his race.

Young freeskier Daisy Thomas also suffered a knee injury in a fall while Misaki Vaughan was ruled out of making her debut, failing a head injury assessment (HIA) after hitting her head while training on Monday.
