Former NRL star Matt Utai is in serious condition after being shot several times in the early hours today in Sydney’s southwest.
The 44-year-old, who previously played for the Wests Tigers and Canterbury Bulldogs, was outside a residence on Macquarie Street in Greenacre around 6 am when shots were fired at him from an SUV that quickly fled the scene.
Paramedics arrived promptly, providing immediate care for his gunshot injuries before transporting him to St George Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Shortly afterward, police responded to reports of a vehicle fire on Samuel Street in Wiley Park, discovering an SUV engulfed in flames.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, allowing the vehicle to be secured for detailed forensic analysis.
Authorities have set up crime scenes at both sites, confirming that the two incidents are connected.
Investigations are continuing.
New Zealand-born Utai joined the Bulldogs in 2002, and was a pivotal member of the club’s 2004 premiership-winning side, scoring two tries in the defeat of the Sydney Roosters.
He also represented New Zealand, including an appearance in the 2008 World Cup.
Utai departed the Bulldogs in 2010 and one year later joined the Wests Tigers, playing for the Sydney club until the end of his career in 2013.
