The family of an 85-year-old Sydney grandfather kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity have spoken publicly, sharing their devastation and pain.

On Friday morning, Chris Baghsarian was forcibly taken from his home in North Ryde by at least two masked individuals. One of these intruders also drove the getaway vehicle, which was later discovered torched in a nearby area.

Police believe Baghsarian was not the intended target and was taken by mistake, but also have grave fears for his safety after a video of him covered and bound was seen. He also requires daily medication, his family says.

In a statement released this evening by police, Baghsarian’s family said they were “living through a nightmare” and were struggling to come to terms with what had happened to the widower.

“The kidnapping of Chris seems unbelievable to us, leaving us bewildered as we try to grasp why he was taken and how our family got entangled in something unrelated to us,” the family expressed.

“Chris is a dedicated father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He is cherished by all, known for his gentle nature and kindness—truly someone who wouldn’t harm a soul.”

Authorities have stated that no ransom has been demanded, and there is no evidence linking the family to any criminal activities.

Neighbours contacted police after hearing commotion from a home in North Ryde in Sydney about 5am yesterday.

The family has requested privacy during this challenging period.

“As we await resolution, we kindly ask the media to respect our privacy and refrain from publishing images of our extended family,” they appealed.

“This is an extraordinarily distressing time, and we need space to support one another and focus on navigating what comes next.”
