The Brooklyn Nets will have to cope without Nic Claxton as they resume play following the All-Star break.

The 26-year-old center is sidelined for Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Arena due to a right ankle sprain. Claxton sustained the injury during a practice session on Wednesday in Brooklyn, and the team has yet to disclose when he might return. Details about the injury’s severity are also unavailable.

Throughout this season, Claxton has been a dependable player for the Nets, participating in 50 of their 53 games. He has maintained averages of 12.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists, while shooting an impressive 59% from the field. His skills in painting protection, facilitating plays from the elbows, and defensive versatility have cemented his role in Brooklyn’s lineup.

Prior to the break, Claxton missed the Nets’ narrow 115-110 defeat to the Indiana Pacers due to soreness in his right hip. This absence allowed Day’Ron Sharpe to step into the spotlight, marking his fourth start of the season with a stellar performance. In 31 minutes, Sharpe contributed 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and two steals, showcasing the energy and playmaking abilities that define his contributions when starting.

Sharpe’s increased time on the court has also fostered a developing rapport with rookie guard Egor Dëmin, particularly through handoff plays and pick-and-roll tactics.

“Day’Ron is exceptional,” Dëmin remarked. “His knack for rebounding is remarkable. He scores a lot from putbacks, which aren’t easy. I’ve been teasing him lately about how frequently he looks for me during handoffs and screens, and I assure him that if he sets the screens, I’ll find him. The more we play together, the more confidence we build, and he simplifies the game for everyone.”

Sharpe has been productive in those opportunities throughout the season. As a starter, he’s averaged 13.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.3 blocks, offering Brooklyn a blend of interior scoring, playmaking and defensive disruption that’s helped stabilize the frontcourt when Claxton isn’t available. His presence figures to be critical again Thursday as the Nets navigate Claxton’s latest setback.

“When I get opportunities to capitalize on opportunity,” Sharpe said. “Can’t control my minutes but whenever I do get minutes capitalize off of it.”

Brooklyn’s depth will be slightly thinner beyond Sharpe, with newly acquired Josh Minott and rookie Ben Saraf both remaining on G League assignment. That leaves the Nets to lean on their available frontcourt options as they open the final stretch of the season.

Claxton’s status will be worth monitoring in the coming days, particularly given his importance to Brooklyn’s defensive identity and offensive flow. For now, the Nets will move forward without their starting center as they face a Cleveland team that presents a physical interior challenge.
