Chicago Bears news: Illinois, Indiana lawmakers taking up Bears stadium bills Thursday

The stage is set for a fierce showdown between Illinois and Indiana lawmakers, as they deliberate over proposals for a new Chicago Bears stadium. This Thursday marks a significant moment in this ongoing saga, as discussions unfold in both states.

In Illinois, attention turns to a House committee hearing scheduled for Thursday morning. The focus will be on a stadium bill aimed at relocating the Bears to Arlington Heights. This hearing comes after a previous attempt to introduce the revised mega-project bill was unexpectedly postponed last week.

This proposed legislation features an amendment introduced by state Representative Kam Buckner, who hails from the Chicago area. His amendment is designed to lure the Bears to Arlington Heights by offering tax incentives linked to infrastructure enhancements. This location is particularly appealing, as the McCaskey family, owners of the Bears, already possess the former Arlington Racetrack site.

Adding to the intrigue, Governor JB Pritzker recently shared his insights on the ongoing battle surrounding the Bears’ potential move during an appearance on MS Now, underscoring the significance of this decision for both states involved.

An amendment from Chicago-area state Representative Kam Buckner outlines tax breaks on infrastructure the state would provide to entice the Bears to build in Arlington Heights, where the McCaskey family already owns the old Arlington Racetrack.

Governor JB Pritzker spoke about the battle over the Bears on MS Now.

“I am not going to be shaken down and I have set out some very clear guidelines and my guidelines are we are not going to fleece the taxpayers of the state Illinois, we are not going to let the Bears do that,” Governor Pritzker.

In Indiana, the state’s full Senate is expected to pass their version of a bill Thursday, clearing the way to fund a stadium in Hammond

Both legislatures could vote on both bills Thursday. All this, as the city of Chicago is still technically in the running to keep the Bears.
