The beloved animated series, ranked by Looper as one of Adult Swim’s top 25 shows of all time, is unexpectedly coming to an end. In a recent video, co-creator Michael Cusack shed light on the decision, sharing, “After we wrapped up Season 3, Zach and I felt both exhausted from the years of work and satisfied with what we’d accomplished. We reached a point where it just felt right to conclude.”
Co-creator Zach Hadel echoed this sentiment, explaining that their intention was always to give their all to the series and conclude on a high note, leaving audiences eager for more rather than overstaying their welcome. The creators were determined to avoid a scenario where the show felt “half-hearted.” Unlike other long-running animated comedies that have changed creative teams over time, Cusack noted that such a shift would be “too weird” for “Smiling Friends,” given their hands-on involvement and the fact that they voice the main characters.
Although the show is ending, Adult Swim is open to the possibility of more episodes or specials if inspiration strikes the creators. Both Cusack and Hadel have expressed a willingness to return when the moment feels right, but for now, they prefer to call it an end rather than a hiatus. “If we come back,” Hadel stated, “it has to be done right, ensuring that it’s something both we and the audience will truly enjoy.”
The duo plans to continue collaborating on other projects outside of “Smiling Friends” while also pursuing individual creative endeavors. The precise timing of the decision to conclude the series remains unclear. However, in a November 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cusack and Hadel emphasized their reluctance to extend the series indefinitely, regardless of external pressures. “Even with a thousand ideas at the end of season five, we wouldn’t continue indefinitely,” Hadel remarked.
Smiling Friends may return in the future, when the creators feel like it
Cusack also reflected on his admiration for The Beatles’ decision to end on a high note with Abbey Road, describing it as a “perfect discography” that fans can revisit. He believes leaving the audience wanting more is the ultimate goal.
If they come back, Hadel said, “it’s gotta be done right and we have to know we’re gonna make something that’s great for you guys that you guys could enjoy and that we enjoy.” The duo will continue to collaborate on other non-“Smiling Friends” projects, as well as creating their own work.
It’s not clear how long ago the series’ maybe-temporary conclusion was decided upon. However, in a November 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cusack and Hadel were clear that they didn’t want to go on forever, despite what their agents and the network might wish. “Even if we had a thousand ideas at the end of season five, we’re not going to go on long. I will say that much,” said Hadel.
Cusack talked about how he admired The Beatles going out on a high point: “They ended with Abbey Road on a peak, and it’s like this nice little discography you can go back to watch. Leaving the audience wanting more is the best.”
