CANADA

A Toronto store has been hit with a $10,000 penalty by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for falsely advertising imported broccoli slaw as a Canadian product. The store was found selling bags of this coleslaw alternative, made with shredded broccoli, that were adorned with “maple leaf advertising decals” and labeled as a “Product of Canada.” However, the packaging clearly indicated it was a “Product of USA,” according to the CFIA.

SPAIN

Cristiano Ronaldo has expanded his ventures into football ownership by acquiring a 25% stake in the Spanish second division team, Almeria. The 41-year-old forward, currently with Al-Nassr, expressed his excitement about collaborating with the club’s leadership to foster its growth. “I’ve always dreamed of contributing to football in ways beyond playing,” Ronaldo stated.

JAPAN

Japan continues to struggle with declining birth rates, as 2025 marked the tenth consecutive year of decreasing births. Official data revealed that 705,809 babies were born, a 2.1% drop from the previous year. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi referred to the situation as a “quiet state of emergency,” highlighting the challenges posed by a shrinking labor force and the strain on the tax system due to fewer working-age individuals.

TONGA

Australian photographer Jono Allen captured the image of an an ultra-rare white humpback whale in the waters of Vava’u, Tonga, and took first prize at the World Nature Photography Awards 2026. The photo shows the albino cetacean, named Mãhina (“moon”), next to his mother. The image stood out among thousands of entries from 51 countries for its beauty and its symbolism for marine conservation. Albino calves are a 1 in 40,000 occurrence.

GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

Hurray, they’re back. Nearly 150 years after the last giant turtles were removed from Floreana Island in Ecuador’s Galápagos archipelago, the species has made a comeback, with 158 juvenile hybrids released to help restore the island’s depleted ecosystem. They took to it like pros and began exploring their new home immediately.
