A dramatic rescue unfolded when a truck driver was airlifted to safety from his cabin, which was trapped by rising floodwaters near Broken Hill.

Heavy rainfall has drenched outback New South Wales, leading to highway closures stretching from Queensland to South Australia.

The rescue operation took place in the remote locality of Yunta, close to Broken Hill.

Upon arrival, a rescue helicopter deployed a crew member who descended onto the cabin, where the driver was anxiously waiting.

After securing the driver in a safety harness, both were hoisted away from the perilous situation.

This dramatic rescue unfolded yesterday afternoon at the border with South Australia.

Roads have been closed across almost half of NSW, although for many it’s not a curse but a blessing.

Orroroo Mayor Grant Chapman said the rain was “magic”, with more than two thirds of the annual rain falling.

Mildura was lashed with almost 150 millimetres of rain in the 36-hour period to 9am today, flooding a major highway and triggering a barrage of calls for help to the State Emergency Service.
