Deranged dad charged for stabbing estranged wife to death as teen daughter fights to save her life

A Long Island man faces charges after allegedly stabbing his estranged wife to death in a failed murder-suicide attempt, while their teenage daughter courageously intervened, authorities disclosed on Monday.

Marcos Aurelio Marques-Leal, 57, was formally charged on Monday for the brutal murder of Adriana Barbosa on February 12, according to prosecutors. During the attack, the couple’s 16-year-old daughter attempted to shield her mother as Marques-Leal allegedly inflicted stab wounds to her head and neck.

Marques-Leal, a legal Brazilian immigrant residing in the United States, reportedly used a planter to break into his estranged wife’s home in Farmingdale. He then assaulted her, injuring the teen’s hands as she tried to defend her mother, stated Suffolk County District Attorney, Raymond Tierney.

After the attack, Marques-Leal attempted to take his own life by stabbing himself in the throat and stomach, yet he survived, according to police.

“The indictment highlights a shocking case of domestic violence that not only took the life of an innocent woman but also left a profound impact on a child who witnessed the horror,” District Attorney Tierney remarked.

“No family should face such a nightmare, and no child should bear the trauma of witnessing a parent’s murder. We are committed to seeking justice with steadfast resolve, with the victims’ experiences at the forefront of this case,” he added.

Marques-Leal broke an order of protection when he showed up to Barbosa’s home on the ill-fated night, officials said.

He tried to force his way into multiple entrances before breaking the glass doors and stalking the terrified victim and daughter into the bedroom where they had locked the door and called 911, according to authorities.

The alleged killer attempted to stab around his daughter but still left her hands cut up, authorities said.

All three were rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where Barbosa was pronounced dead shortly after arrival while Marques-Leal survived and his daughter was treated for minor injuries.

Marques-Leal has since been charged with murder, burglary, endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated criminal contempt.

He is due back in court March 25, and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
