An airport worker has faced court over claims he performed a Nazi salute to a group of Jewish schoolchildren.
Oscar Diaz Ysuiza, 23, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court today, about a month after federal police charged him over an incident at Melbourne airport.

Authorities from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have announced charges against a man from Greenvale, accusing him of performing a Nazi salute aimed at a group of Jewish children within an airport terminal on February 2.

The individual, identified as Ysuiza, is said to have exited the airport shortly after the incident, which was subsequently reported to the AFP.

In response, AFP officers conducted a thorough review of CCTV footage and interviewed witnesses, successfully identifying Ysuiza. Later that day, they visited his residence in Greenvale, located in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

Officials confirmed that Ysuiza was employed at the airport and possessed an Aviation Security Identification Card, according to AFP statements.

Ysuiza now faces charges, issued on summons, for making a Nazi gesture in a public setting where such actions are likely to offend, insult, humiliate, or intimidate others.

The charge carries a potential maximum sentence of five years imprisonment.

Ysuiza sat behind his legal aid lawyer as upcoming court dates were set, and left the court to awaiting media where he covered his face with a cap.

He will return to court on May 26 for a committal mention.
