Police have arrested a man in relation to the 14-year-old cold case disappearance of AFL great Barry Breen’s brother Brendan.
Victoria Police Missing Persons Squad detectives arrested a man in Brisbane this morning after travelling to Queensland as part of their investigation in Brendan Breen’s 2012 disappearance.

A man involved in the investigation has been questioned and subsequently released as inquiries continue.

Brendan Breen was reported missing when he cancelled dinner with his wife via text message in May 2012 but there were some doubts about whether he’d left on his own accord until he missed his own daughter’s funeral four years later. (Victoria Police)

The mysterious disappearance of Brendan, last seen in April 2012 at the Hilton hotel in South Wharf by his girlfriend, remains unsolved.

The then-55-year-old was reported missing one month later in May after he cancelled dinner with his separated wife via an unusual text message.

In a heartbreaking sequence of events, Brendan missed his daughter’s wedding just a month after he vanished. Tragically, four years later, he was also absent from her funeral.

Since his disappearance, there has been no activity on Brendan’s bank accounts or mobile phone, further deepening the mystery.

Authorities have assessed the situation and concluded that foul play is a likely factor in his disappearance, according to statements made by police last month.

Brendan is the brother of St Kilda great Barry Breen, who kicked the winning point in the Saints' only premiership win in 1966.

Adding to the intrigue, Brendan, who was also known by the aliases Brendan Green, Brian Greer, and Brendan Lacombe, had a criminal past. He faced fraud charges in the past and served several years in prison.

“There are a number of aspects about his disappearance that continue to give us cause for concern, especially the length of time he has been missing with no trace whatsoever,” Missing persons squad Inspector Dave Dunstan said.

“We know he had a number of associates who were also known to police, and while they have been spoken to over the years, this remains an active avenue of enquiry for investigators.”
