Born Peter Claver Cullen on July 28, 1941, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he grew up as the son of American parents, Muriel and Henry Cullen, with siblings Sonny, Michaela, and Larry. Of Irish descent, Cullen graduated in 1963 from the National Theatre School of Canada as part of its inaugural class. His brother Larry, a former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, served as inspiration for Cullen’s iconic Optimus Prime voice.
Career
In 1968, Cullen, alongside Joan Stuart, took on the roles of Giles and Penelope in the CBC Radio segment “L’Anglaise” on “Funny You Should Say That.” The following year, he starred as Commander Bi Bi Latuque on CFCF-TV’s children’s show “The Buddies.” After working as a radio announcer in Montreal, he was the voice behind CBS’s “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” from 1967 to 1969. He also became a regular on “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” (1971-1974) and announced for “The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show” in 1974. By 1979, he was voicing characters on shows like “Mighty Man and Yukk” and “Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo.” During the 1980s, his voice appeared in films such as “Heidi’s Song” (1982), “Gremlins” (1984), and “Predator” (1987), among others.

Peter Cullen is a father to four children: Angus, Pilar, Clay, and Claire. He shares a close friendship with Frank Welker, who voices Megatron, Optimus Prime’s adversary, in “Transformers” series. An avid supporter of NASA, Cullen’s interest in the organization dates back to the historic Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.
