Iran ‘reaches consensus’ on next Supreme Leader
Iran appears to have reached a broad agreement on who will succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as the nation’s Supreme Leader.
Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the current leader, is anticipated to take over the role, having secured backing from the influential Revolutionary Guards.
The Assembly of Experts, responsible for selecting the country’s leader, seems to have nearly finalized their choice, according to Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqer, a member of the assembly.
A senior cleric indicated on Saturday that the assembly members could convene swiftly, potentially within a day, to make the official decision.
Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekasir, another voice in the Assembly of Experts, stated that the candidate was chosen according to the late Ayatollah’s counsel, which advised selecting someone who is ‘despised by the enemy.’
Heidari Alekasir noted that even the “Great Satan,” a term often used for the United States, has acknowledged the successor, referencing former President Donald Trump’s comment that Mojtaba Khamenei would be an ‘unacceptable’ choice.
