Indiana mom pleads guilty to neglect after son, 7, dies in house fire

An Indiana mother, Kirstin D. Bowers, will serve a 16-year prison sentence after accepting a plea deal related to the tragic death of her 7-year-old son in a fire at their Shelbyville home. This resolution comes nine months after the devastating blaze in June, which claimed the life of young David Jr., as reported by WTHR.

The fire, which consumed the family’s residence, led to the escape of three of Bowers’ other children. However, within a month, Bowers found herself under arrest. The investigation was prompted by concerns raised by both her husband and neighbors, who suspected foul play.

In her initial account, Bowers claimed the fire started accidentally when she fell asleep while smoking a cigarette, only to wake up and find her bed in flames. This narrative quickly unraveled when her husband informed authorities that smoking inside was not a practice they engaged in at home. Moreover, neighbors recounted hearing a heated argument just days before the fire, where Bowers allegedly shouted, “I f—ing hate you, and I hope everything you love dies,” directed at her husband, as reported by Fox59.

She claimed she hung up because she was “freaking out” and trying to rescue her kids, but police noted in their incident report that she had no soot or smell of smoke on her.

Bowers also told police a bizarre tale that neighbors might report seeing her walking around their street before the fire — and claimed that she had been out and about about five minutes before the fire, but that she then went home and fell asleep smoking a cigarette in that time.

The home was completely engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived and her son’s body was found in the living room by the time it was put out.

Bowers will plead guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in death, and will also face 14 years of probation upon her release and be required to follow a “strict compliance with any prescriptions” for medication.
