A magnitude 4.4 earthquake has struck north of Canberra, affecting thousands of people in the region’s largest shake in decades.
Geoscience Australia said the tremblor hit at a depth of 12 kilometres near Boorowa, about 100 kilometres north of the capital, at about 7.10pm.
The light to moderate quake was felt as far afield as Sydney Batemans Bay, Gosford and Albury.

Over 5,000 individuals have reported feeling the tremors from the recent earthquake.

According to Hugh Glanville, a seismologist at Geoscience Australia, while the quake was significant for the region, it was not without precedent.

He noted that in the past century, the area has experienced at least 25 earthquakes exceeding a magnitude of four. However, this recent tremor was the most powerful since a magnitude 4.8 quake hit Browning in 1977, which resulted in minor damages.

“This is around the magnitude where you start observing minor damage from earthquakes,” Glanville explained.

“Currently, we’re uncertain of the full extent, but it’s possible to see minor issues such as cracked plaster, objects falling from shelves, and slight damage to buildings.”

A resident from Goulbourn shared on Facebook that the experience was akin to a train rumbling by, causing the entire house to shake.

There have been no reports of damage.

Glanville said there had been 346 earthquakes within 100 kilometres of the latest epicentre in the past 20 years but most were much smaller.

He said residents could expect aftershocks that would likely be smaller.
