Calumet Park fire: Residents who lost apartments, belongings on Valentine's Day still struggling to recover

CALUMET PARK, Ill. (WLS) — A month has passed since a devastating blaze tore through an apartment complex in Calumet Park, leaving families displaced and grappling with the aftermath. As of Sunday evening, many victims are still on the road to recovery.

The incident occurred on Valentine’s Day, with residents suspecting the fire originated in the basement’s boiler room stairway. Charlene Davis, residing directly above, was among the first to notice the danger.

Since the early morning fire erupted, Davis has been residing in temporary accommodations, such as hotels. Upon discovering the fire, she immediately contacted emergency services and took swift action by alerting her neighbors to the imminent threat.

Forced to abandon her belongings, Davis watched as flames quickly consumed her apartment.

“The fire department mentioned I was fortunate to escape in time, as the flames began to breach the floor,” Davis recounted.

Remarkably, all the residents, including Davis, evacuated safely, avoiding any serious injuries. However, Davis admits the struggle continues as she attempts to rebuild her life after losing everything to the fire.

“It’s tough, because I have to get all of my identification again, and it’s hard, because they say, you have to have your birth certificate, or, you have to have this. Well, it all got burned up in the fire. It’s been a tough road,” Davis said.

Davis says she and a number of the other residents who prefer not to speak on camera are still waiting to be let into the building to try to salvage any possessions they might be able to find. Many of them have no renter’s insurance and have lost everything.

“I’m able to talk about it now without crying, but some days are harder than others,” Davis said.

ABC7 spoke with a lawyer who represents a number of the residents. He says he is working to come up with some sort of settlement with the owners of the property to help compensate the residents for all they have lost.
