Exclusive to Fox: Fox News has obtained information about the arrest of an undocumented immigrant linked to the tragic hit-and-run that claimed the life of a Texas sheriff’s deputy.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed on Wednesday that Dennis Arguello-Acosta was taken into custody on Saturday.

Officials reported that Arguello-Acosta was behind the wheel of the vehicle involved in the fatal incident that killed Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Deputy Kenneth Lewis on February 21, and then fled the scene.

According to the FBI and DHS, Arguello-Acosta, who is in the country illegally, has been apprehended in connection with the death of Deputy Lewis.

“Deputy Kenneth Lewis was a dedicated officer serving his community, and his life was unjustly cut short by a criminal who should not have been in this country,” stated Lauren Bis, Acting DHS Assistant Secretary.

She further emphasized, “ICE has taken Arguello-Acosta into custody to prevent any further risk to public safety. Under President Trump’s administration, there is no place for criminal illegal aliens in the United States.”

A tipster reached out to rhe FBI and other law enforcement agencies with information on Arguello-Acosta before he was arrested at his home, DHS said.

Lewis, 51, died two days after he was hit on Interstate 10. At the time, he was off-duty but in uniform when he stopped to assist drivers involved in a separate two-vehicle crash, Fox Houston reported.

As Lewis was rendering aid he was struck by a third vehicle, authorities said.

“A superhero is someone that thinks of others before themselves,” Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said at the time. “And that’s what Deputy Lewis was doing. He took it upon himself to go back on duty to try to help that individual.”

Lewis nearly died 12 years earlier while working for the Missouri City Police Department just outside Houston when he was forced to jump 30 feet off a bridge to avoid being hit by an oncoming vehicle while he was working an accident scene.
