Australia is unlikely to face a fuel crisis despite the cancellation of six oil shipments. However, experts caution that these cancellations expose the country’s susceptibility to global supply chain disruptions.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen announced the halted tanker deliveries on Sunday, acknowledging that the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict might lead to some “supply bumps.”
The global oil market has been rocked by Iran’s virtual shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz—a vital international trade corridor—in retaliation to American and Israeli military actions, causing oil prices to surge.
While domestic petrol and diesel costs have escalated, the government insists that any shortages in regional and rural areas stem from panic-buying rather than actual supply shortages.
According to Bowen, Australia typically receives over 80 fuel shipments monthly, but a few have been canceled recently.
“We’ve identified six vessels that have been called off,” Bowen mentioned during an appearance on ABC’s Insiders program.
