A prominent figure within Mayor Brandon Johnson’s team is set to depart from her role in Chicago.

Nancy Andrade, who has been the city’s human relations commissioner since 2021, is now preparing to exit her position.

In her resignation letter, Andrade explained that her decision coincides with her son’s transition from elementary to high school, as he is a diverse learner.

Andrade expressed her gratitude to ABC7, stating, “I commend the incredible CCHR team for their unwavering dedication. The CCHR acts as a guiding light for all Chicagoans who have faced the shadows of hate, providing justice to those who have suffered the indignities of discrimination. As both the leader of the CCHR and a licensed attorney, I am committed to upholding these principles and maintaining a stringent ethical code. My resignation honors that commitment. The CCHR stands as the civil rights agency for all of Chicago. My earnest hope is that the CCHR and its Board remain focused on tackling antisemitism and all other discrimination affecting our city.”

Alderman Debra Silverstein of Chicago’s 50th Ward commented on Andrade’s exit, remarking, “Her departure from the Chicago Commission on Human Relations comes at a critical time when anti-Jewish sentiment is increasing. The Jewish community needs allies in City Hall who are willing to listen, cooperate, and respond swiftly to the rising tide of hate.”

ABC7 sought a response from the mayor’s office regarding Silverstein’s concerns that Andrade’s resignation leaves a gap for the Jewish community in the city, but there was no immediate reply.

This comes after Johnson fired his deputy for public safety last week.
