The consumer watchdog has urgently recalled a component of a baby monitoring system due to concerns over potential fire hazards.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has alerted parents about the Babysense MaxView video baby monitor, specifically the 5.5″ Split Screen Full HD 1080P model. The parent viewing screen unit of this monitor is at risk of overheating during charging.

This overheating issue could cause the battery to melt or spark, posing a significant threat to users.

The ACCC highlighted that the lithium-ion battery in the parent unit’s viewing screen might overheat while charging. This malfunction could lead to the battery swelling, melting, emitting smoke, or even sparking, thus becoming a potential fire hazard.

The commission cautioned about the severe risks involved, which include serious injury, death, and property damage if the battery were to ignite during charging.

There have already been incidents reported overseas, further underscoring the urgency of this recall.

It only affects a specific range, with serial numbers available on the ACCC website.

The recall does not involve MaxView Pro or any other Babysense models.

Customers are advised to log their faulty product details to receive a free replacement.

And they’re being warned to dispose of the product at a hazardous waste facility, not in their regular household rubbish bins or recycling.
