During a heated exchange on the Today show, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles found himself at odds with host Karl Stefanovic over the government’s handling of the ongoing fuel crisis. As fuel prices continue to burden Australians, tensions surrounding the government’s response have intensified.

Appearing on the program this morning, Marles defended the government’s efforts, emphasizing that they are taking steps to alleviate the situation. “We are releasing stockpiles and ensuring fuel reaches areas in need,” Marles explained.

He acknowledged the difficulties faced by Australians, saying, “We recognize there is a significant challenge, Karl. We understand that.” Marles reassured viewers that the government is approaching the issue with a “calm and prudent” strategy.

However, Stefanovic, voicing the frustrations of sectors like fishing, farming, and construction, criticized the government’s approach, describing it as “amateur hour.” The exchange highlights the growing dissatisfaction among those affected by the crisis.

“What we are going to do is deal with this in a calm and prudent manner.”

Stefanovic, raising the concerns of fisherman, farmers and builders, accused the government’s actions as being “amateur hour”.

He posed the plight of independent petrol stations, who had run out of fuel two weeks ago, to which Marles said that “nine out of 10 stations have fuel”.

“I don’t know what you’re saying,” Stefanovic said. “[The fuel] is just not getting there.”
