Chicago crime: Nassie Mason, Erving Harris targeted contractor Jerry Lewis in fatal shooting on Madison near United Center

CHICAGO (WLS) — In a recent development, two men from Chicago have been charged with the fatal shooting of a local contractor near the United Center. A judge has ruled that both suspects will remain in custody as they await trial.

Nassie Mason, aged 28, and Erving Harris, aged 31, are both facing serious charges, including first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm due to prior felony convictions.

The accused appeared in court on Friday, where a judge decided they should be held without bail until their trial proceedings commence.

According to Chicago police, the suspects were apprehended on Tuesday in the 2100 block of West Madison Street. The arrest occurred shortly after the tragic death of 67-year-old Jerry Lewis, who was shot in the same vicinity just before 1 p.m.

Authorities reported that Lewis was shot in the head and was swiftly transported to Stroger Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Prosecutors revealed that Chicago Police Department officers witnessed the incident firsthand and arrested the suspects within seconds. Surveillance footage also corroborated the charges, showing the suspects waiting for Lewis to leave a building before approaching and fatally shooting him.

Mason allegedly shot Lewis in the back of the head, and Harris allegedly stood over the victim and shot him three more times, according to prosecutors.

Lewis had a profound impact on the construction community and those on the West Side, his wife said.

The 67-year-old’s family said he was shot while walking between offices when he was approached by two gunmen who opened fire.

Lewis’ family said he was a successful Chicago contractor and developer who was instrumental in Project 1901, the $7-billion development of property around the United Center.
